Visits to the Altiplano

Perhaps the most anticipated part of any trip to Bolivia is the visit to the Altiplano. These tours take in the wonders of the Bolivian Altiplano: the train cemetery near Uyuni, the Salar de Uyuni (the largest salt flat in the world) and the Eduardo Avaroa National Park with its lagoons and geysers. Travel tip: Excursions in the Bolivian Altiplano are done in 4×4 vehicles and last at least 3 days. The best time to visit the Altiplano is from May to August: just be careful at night, as temperatures can drop significantly. It is the highest region of Bolivia and its climate is much cooler than the rest of the country, which makes for a pleasant visit. Between November and April there are usually quite a few major floods. In summary: we recommend visiting the Salar de Uyuni between August and October for the best weather conditions.

Adventure travel

Thousands of tourists seek thrills every year on the "Camino de la Muerte" (Death Road), the country's premier adventure tourism activity. The journey begins at a dizzying 4700 meters between the snow-capped peaks of La Cumbre and descends some 3600 meters to the jungle valleys of Los Yungas. Also known as the most dangerous road in the world, this rocky gravel road is not to be taken lightly, more than a dozen tourists have died on the route since the tours began and many others have been injured.  If you're still up for a little more adventure after mountain biking the Camino de la Muerte, then Bolivia's best zip line experience is conveniently located at the end of the dangerous road. It consists of three sections that last 1,550 meters combined and speeds of up to 84 kilometers per hour can be reached as you soar above the breathtaking Yungas Valley.
