Top Destinations for Autumn in Argentina
The inescapable heat has finally been seeing its way out, making room for more comfortable breezes. Don’t know about you, but we’re welcoming autumn with open arms. While there are lots of activities to enjoy in Buenos Aires, we’ve compiled a few places in the rest of Argentina to check out now that the humidity is not so dreadful and the winter is in the seemingly distant future.
Iguazú Falls
The Iguazu Falls are on the must-see list for every traveler visiting South America, especially Argentina. Located on the Argentinian and Brazilian border, the powerful falls make for one of the most spectacular natural sites on the continent, hence its meaning “great waters” in the guarani language. However, it is not so “great” year-round. During the wintertime, the falls dry up and travelers may be disappointed if they don’t live up to the reputation as the gushing waterfalls 3 times the size of Niagra. Rainy season, December to February, is the best time to see the falls at full force, but it can also be extremely hot and muggy. Plus, there is a good chance you will be packed like sardines on your tour, since tourists typically opt for this time of year to visit. We decided that March is a great time to go. The falls are still strong enough for you to see, feel and hear the Iguazu experience (and snap some envy-inducing photos), yet the temperatures are a little more mild. Check out Iguazu Falls tours, ranging from starlit tours to strolls in the National Park.

El Calafate is the hub for glacier-seeking travelers who want to explore the profound natural beauty and culture of Patagonia. Perhaps the most popular attraction is the Perito Moreno, the famous glacier where you can discover lagoons and caves during your trek. You can also choose a tour that takes you across the country’s largest lake, Lago Argentino, to visit all of the area’s glaciers. The Torres del Paine is also a hugely popular tour that introduces you to the colorful lakes, jagged mountain peaks and astounding natural beauty of Patagonia. Though Perito Moreno tours often run until April, Torres de Paine tours often don’t run from March to August due to the winter season, so check to see that you are able to get a last-chance deal.
[caption id="attachment_7486" align="aligncenter" width="540"]Bariloche
Located near the Chilean border, Bariloche is well-known for its idyllic scenery due to its location on the Nahuel Huapi Lake in the foothills of the Andes. The city is a mecca for skiiers and trekkers in the wintertime, but there is still a lot to enjoy if you catch the tail end of the summer season. Bariloche lake toursare plentiful in this region due to all the...you guessed it...lakes. In fact, many stop operating regularly come April, so March is a great time to schedule a trip. Enjoy a tour of the 7 Lakes, where you will explore the nearby town of San Martín de Los Andes and stunning views of the region’s vast lake district. Though the water is cold year round, you can still take advantage of the lingering summer weather and relax on the beaches (of which there are many). Another popular tour is the lake crossing to Chile. Or skip the water altogether and take in a birds-eye view of Victoria Island, Llao Llao peninsula and the lakes Nahuel Huapi and Perito Moreno by taking a chairlift up the Cerro Campanario. The town's Swiss influence is very apparent so if nothing else, admire the unique architecture and enjoy some decadent chocolate.

Located about 1,380 km south of Buenos Aires (850 miles), Puerto Madryn is the place to check out an array of marine wildlife. The town also attracts avid skimboarders, scuba divers (it is actually considered the country's scuba diving capital) or those who just want to enjoy some sun and sand during the warm months. Whale-watching off Peninsula Valdés is a highly sought out activity, though the high season typically lasts from September to December. However, you can still see sea lions, dolphins, elephant seals and penguins (!!!) even during off season, so it's worth a trip. Check out some Puerto Madryn tours to see which ones best fit your time in Argentina.
[caption id="attachment_262" align="aligncenter" width="540"]Autumn in Argentina is a great time to check out the sites, the weather is tamer and the lines are likely to be a (tad) shorter. Plus, everything is better when the hot summer air doesn’t feel like it is weighing your body down, right? Similarly, you can head down south before the harsh Patagonian winters make you want to do nothing but isolate yourself by a fire and drink hot chocolate.
