Caipirinha is an easy-to-make drink that has become the classic drink of Brazil. Traditionally prepared with cachaça (rum from sugar cane fermentation), raw sugar, crushed lemons or limes, and ice, the caipirinha is served in every bar in Brazil. Caipirinha was originally intended to be a cocktail for drinking at the beach, but its popularity turned this Brazilian spirit into a drink for bars and nightlife too. Its popularity grew exponentially when the International Bartenders Association recognized it as one of their Official Cocktails!

Caipirinha is such a classic drink in Brazil, it's almost mandatory for visitors to try it. If you travel to Rio de Janeiro, dance with the beautiful Brazilian samba dancers and drink as many caipirinhas as you can!The word caipirinha comes from the Brazilian word “caipira,” which means someone from the countryside. In American English, similar words are “hillbilly” or “redneck.” The origins of the drink aren’t specific, but Brazilians say that caipirinha is originally from São Paulo, since the word “caipira” refers to the people from the countryside of this region. The initial recipe included honey and was used as a medicine for the flu.You can find variations of the caipirinha in Rio de Janeiro. Try them all!
