Summer in Rio de Janeiro is hot, and we're not just talking about the beautiful people and the electric nightlife. The first official day of summer hit 39ºC, with a real feel reaching closer to 50ºC. So if you're heading to Brazil's Marvellous City this summer, leave the layers at home, pack in your sunscreen, swimsuit and flip-flops, and arm yourself with these tips on how to survive summer in Rio!

Stay hydrated
One of the most important things in the heat is to stay hydrated. Sure, water is always important, but since you're in Rio, you may as well use the heat as an excuse to sample the various exotic beverages on offer. What better way to cool off on the beach than sipping coconut water (or água de coco) from an actual coconut? It looks cool, plus it is super hydrating (and a great cure for a hangover). Or give mate a try, a herbal tea made from the yerba mate plant served cold with lemonade. You don't even have to leave your spot on the beach - just look for a vendor carrying two round canisters. If you're after something a little sweeter, you can't walk very far in Rio de Janeiro without coming across a fruit juice stand. With a wide variety of fresh fruits to try, you're always guaranteed a deliciously refreshing drink.Cool off in one of Rio' shady spots like the Botanical Garden / Photo: Source
Relax in the shade
Escaping the sun doesn't have to mean lounging, unmoving, under your hotel's aircon. The ultimate shady spot in the city is under the protection of the one of the world's largest urban forests: Tijuca Forest. Not only is it cooler than the beach, it's also one of Rio's highlights, with plenty of plants and wildlife to see. Book a jeep tour of Tijuca Forest to explore this incredible green space more thoroughly. Alternatively, head for the parks in Rio de Janeiro, including the magnificent Botanical Garden. This tropical paradise still has the largest urban forest in the world, which is a pure preserved Atlantic forest! / Photo: Daytours4u
Hit the beach
When you're in Rio, the number one priority for most people is getting in some quality beach time. Head to one of the city's most popular beaches, such as Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana, or explore some of the less touristy ones like São Conrado, Barra de Tijuca or Prainha. Take some precautions in the heat and be sure to hire an umbrella from one of the vendors. When the heat gets too much, take to the waves. Water sports are the best way to stay active in the summer in Rio de Janeiro. So give surfing lessons a go, or enjoy the peace and tranquility of the beach while watching Rio de Janeiro from a totally different and unique perspective with a Kayaking tour in Rio. Also keep in mind these tips when you are heading to the beautiful beaches outside Rio, take advantage of your time in the marvelous city and enjoy a Day Tour from Rio to Arraial do Cabo with Boat Ride or a Day Tour in Búzios from Rio with Panoramic Navigation. This tour is ideal for those who like the beach, the sun and want to relax / Photo: Daytours4u
Escape the city
If the heat gets too much, enjoy a day trip outside of Rio de Janeiro to where it is slightly cooler. The beautiful imperial city of Petrópolis is just 65km from the city of Rio, nestled in the hills of Serra dos Órgãos, and the valley of the rivers Quitandinha and Piabanha. Not only is the temperature much milder here, due to its higher altitude, there is also plenty to do and see, such as the impressive Quitandinha palace, a gorgeous cathedral, museums and even a chocolate factory. The easiest way to visit is by booking a Petrópolis full day tour. Rio may be hot, but that's the way we like it. The temperature matches the city's sizzling temperament, creating the perfect environment for a sultry summer in Rio de Janeiro. Besides, with miles of beautiful coast, and lush green forests, there is always relief from the sun nearby.
