On Saturday 5th November, Buenos Aires will host the annual LGBT Pride Parade (Marcha del Orgullo) which is in its 20th year. Members of Buenos Aires’s gay and lesbian communities, tourists and LGBT supporters will come together as usual for the annual Pride in Buenos Aires Fair at 15.00 at the Plaza de Mayo. This will then lead into the parade which starts at 18.00 and will end at Plaza del Congreso. [caption id="attachment_5525" align="aligncenter" width="610"]
Pride in Buenos Aires / Source[/caption] If you are in Buenos Aires, you must not miss this parade. The Pride in Buenos Aires march raises awareness about the current issues affecting the LGBT community. For many years, the tagline of the Parade was “The same rights with the same names”. The motto refers to wanting equal Gay Marriage Laws. On 15th July 2010, equal same-sex marriage rights were put into action in Argentina, making it the first country in Latin America to approve same-sex marriage. On Saturday, the purpose behind the parade will be to promote the need for a change in Gender Identity Law which if passed by the Argentine Congress, will enable transsexuals and transvestites to change their name and sex on their birth certificates, and enable them to have sex re-assignation surgery. The Parade is the final party which rounds off Pride Week (Semana del Orgullo) in Buenos Aires. Semana del Orgullo celebrates the successes and pride of the LGBT community and works towards raising awareness of issues affecting LGBT Porteños today. The first parade took place in 1992 with 250 people turning up to show their support. La Marcha del Orgullo has come a long way since then with over 100,000 people turning up to show their support for the Parade last year. The proud, active and vibrant community means that Buenos Aires has become an extremely popular destination for LGBT tourists from around the world and an example for other cities. Therefore, there are many websites and companies which specialise in gay-friendly tourism in Buenos Aires, providing apartment rentals and tailored trips of Buenos Aires. Book with any agency and feel care free, as there are strong anti-discrimination laws in place within Argentina.
