Buenos Aires is well known for its large amount of classic cafes that remain in the city from the golden Tango years. The city council has declared 60 places all over the city, as places of cultural interest and has awarded them with the title of Cafe Notables, which means that they have contributed to the cultural and social development of the country. La Confiteria Ideal is one of them. Some of them are notable for their architecture; others for the number of writers, politicians and musicians that wrote many of their most famous pieces of work inspired by the atmosphere and the many afternoon gatherings in the Cafe Notables. Tango at La Confiteria Ideal

La Confiteria Ideal is not necessarily the prettiest of buildings on the outside, you may even pass by without noticing it. But inside it has an air of classic elegance, and a nostalgic feel mixed in with its art deco decoration. The Cafe Notable's marble stairs, its marvelous vitraux, and the incomparable arbor that support the central room will show you why Buenos Aires has been called the Paris of South America and will take you back to the classic years of European immigration. You must try their famous palmeritas (glazed cookies) in the large tearoom before heading upstairs to the Academia de Tango Ideal and Clases Milongas. The Academia de Tango Ideal runs multilingual tango classes for beginners’ right through to the seasoned professional. The Cafe Notable's tango classes take place Monday to Friday and are open to all ages and a partner is not required. The Milonga classes and shows take place throughout the day from Monday to Sunday. However, make sure you register with La Confiteria Ideal before attending as classes fill up quickly and are limited to only 20 people.
