Insider Tips for Travellers in Rio de Janeiro
When planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro, naturally your itinerary will include famous tourist attractions such as Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, el Sambodromo and the many beaches within the city. However, for those looking to explore aspects of Rio de Janeiro that aren’t on the tourist trail, we have a few alternative suggestions for things to do. Our support team member Emiliano Crespo, an expert on the city after spending five weeks there, has provided us with these valuable insider tips for travellers in Rio de Janeiro:
Sample the ultimate burger
If you’re in the neighbourhood of Lapa, pass through the middle of the burger stands just below the Arcos da Lapa on the right-hand side and order a burger from the man working on the third stand. Legend has it that this man used to work for McDonalds and somehow stole their recipe, now he sells the exact same burgers for a mere 6 reals! Whether or not you believe the legend, give them a try as, according to Emiliano, they’re pretty damn delicious.
Combine art with stunning views
After climbing the Escalera de Selarón, walk a little further until you reach Chácara do Céu. This is the former mansion of fine arts collector Raymundo Ottoni de Castro Maya, which has been transformed into a museum. Here you can find old drawings, paintings and sculptures that belonged to the artist, as well as enjoy a panoramic view over the centre of Rio and Guanabara Bay.

The best place to try a caipirinha, Brazil’s delicious but deadly cocktail, is Bar do Mineiro, an old-fashioned boteco and favourite amongst locals and travellers who like to drift off the beaten path. With eclectic décor, friendly waiters and tasty food as well as drinks, you can’t go amiss here. If you’re feeling hungry, be sure to order the prato feito, a hearty dish composed of chicken or beef with rice, chips and beans.

Cultural centre Casa do Barao is just around the corner from Bar do Mineiro. Go on a Sunday night and head to the basement, where you’ll find yourself in amongst people dancing along to forró, lively music that originated in North-eastern Brazil. The atmosphere is great and the beer is budget-friendly, however if you need the toilet you’ll have to make your way back up to the top and up another floor, so be wary of how much you drink!
Party in a converted warehouse
If you’re in the mood to dress up and experience a truly enchanting night, be sure to pay a visit to the Rio Scenarium, once an antique warehouse and now a museum, restaurant, concert hall and nightclub all in one! You can’t help but feel like you've stepped back in time to a 1950’s movie in this glamorous setting, where you can enjoy a variety of Brazilian music and mingle with residents of the Lapa neighbourhood.
