While the United States and Europe celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th, Brazilians have been celebrating Dia dos Enamorados on June 12 since 1948. But why? The date of this celebration has a very different history than that of February 14th. It is closely related to the life of the Portuguese friar Fernando de Bulhões (Saint Antônio) because in his religious teachings he emphasized the importance of love and marriage. After he was canonized, he became known as the “matchmaker saint” due to his messages. Brazilians believe that he could bless couples with prosperous marriages and reconcile those who were having troubles. “Dia dos Namorados” is one of the most important dates on the Brazilian calendar. In fact, it is the third biggest holiday for businesses in the country, just behind Christmas and Mother’s Day. The net revenue on this day of romance nearly reaches 1.5 billion dollars.
