ProColombia, a government organisation in charge of promoting tourism in Colombia, has received an award from Diversity Consulting International and the Gay International Tourism Fair (Fitur Gay) for its achievements in developing tourism for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.
“For us, it is recognition of the work carried out by numerous businessmen and women to satisfy, with excellence, the existing demand in this segment of tourism, and the way that Colombian society is travelling in favour of equality of rights” said Felipe Jaramillo, the President of ProColombia, at Fitur Gay, which took place between January 18th and January 22nd in Madrid, Spain. This accolade indeed acknowledges the efforts that Colombia has made in terms of equality, particularly in its legislation Fitur Gay is backed by a host of major global institutions, including the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, while Diversity Consulting International is a consultancy firm that provides advice and services to companies that intend to venture into the LGBT market. Tourism in Colombia is set to strengthen considerably through this recognition and indeed other awards it has received recently, the most notable of which came at the 2016 World Travel Awards where Medellín was voted South America's Leading City Break Destination. For these and the most obvious reasons – the country’s charm, beautiful landscapes, warm people, and exquisite gastronomy – Colombia continues to thrive as a top destination on the itineraries of travellers around South America.
