The Buenos Aires Tango Festival and World Championship, one of the most important tango events in the world, is back! Taking place between the 14th and 27th of August 2015, it is a two-week celebration of all things tango.

Things kick off with the Buenos Aires Tango Festival, which has many activities including exhibitions, films, and classes. The event culminates in the Mundial, or World Championship, where tango dancers from all over the world will compete.

Buenos Aires Tango Festival

The tango festival starts on Friday 14 August. There is plenty for the ordinary public to enjoy all over the city, making tango accessible to everyone. Here are some of the activities on offer:

Feria de Productos

Get everything you need relating to tango at the product fair taking place at Usina del Arte, the main venue of the festival. You can find dance shoes and clothes, books, records, various designs and other objects related to tango. The fair takes place every day from 15 - 23 August, and is open from 1pm to 9pm.

Practice Sessions, Tango Lessons & Exhibitions

In the vicinity of Usina del Arte is an exhibition space where you can witness the best milonga styles. There will be lessons run here by professional teachers. A beginners lesson takes place at 14:30, and regular milongueros can take a class at 15:30. Classes will be held on 15, 16, 17, 22 and 23 August. There will also be exhibitions and practice sessions in this space, with various milongas putting on demonstrations, as well as featured DJ's.

Special Productions, Tributes and Premieres

The BA Tango Festival isn't just about dancing. The music genre of tango will also take centre stage with a number of performances and tributes to tango legends, such as Carlos Gardel. Performances will take place at Teatro Colón, Usina del Arte, Teatre 25 de Mayo and Luna Park. See the full programme here.

Other Activities

Tango lovers can enjoy a number of other activities as well. There will be various films shown at the Museo del Cine (Cinema Museum) highlighting tango in cinema. Contemporary tango music will also be given a showcase with the presentations of new albums. In addition, there will also be art exhibitions on display in Usina del Arte. Tango World Championship

With dancers from countries all over the world taking part, the Tango World Championship is one of the best important events in the tango calendar. There are two categories for the competition:

  • Tango de Pista: This is Salon Tango, and follows strict rules. This is a more traditional style of tango;
  • Tango Escenario: Stage Tango is more choreographic, and draws on other styles. This is more similar to what you would see at a tango show.

Tickets

While the events during the tango festival and the World Tango Championship in Buenos Aires are free, you do need to get tickets for the shows. These are given out in advance and most shows are restricted to two tickets per person.
