This month marks the 90th anniversary of Jorge Luis Borges’ first published book, Fervor de Buenos Aires. He along with Julio Cortazar and Ernesto Sabato, is probably the most important argentine writers. As an international literary icon, Borges is revered for his works from poetry to essays to short stories. The anniversary celebration of Fervor de Buenos Aires, a collection of poems, was even celebrated last week in New York with readings of various poems throughout the book. Upon moving back to his native city, his writings frequented Sur, the most important literary magazine during the 1930s and 1940s. The magazine also featured other important authors, and was founded by Veronica Ocampo, one of the most influential Argentina woman.  Later in his career, Borges became intrigued with more profound works of fiction, exploring themes of existentialism, also influenced by Jean-Paul Sartre. He also held a position as literature professor at University of Buenos Aires, and received various literary awards throughout his career. Borges died in 1986 in Switzerland where he is also buried. However, his work remains popular throughout the world, and if you are in Buenos Aires, you can stop by the Centro Cultural Borges (Viamonte and San Martin), where there are numerous other exhibitions by various artists, or even stop by his former residence on the corner of Sante Fe and Florida.
