As many have already discovered, the conveniently flat city of Buenos Aires, with its neat grid system formed by parallel and perpendicular streets and avenues, makes for the perfect city to walk around in. However what many residents and tourist still don’t take advantage of are the great bike tours Buenos Aires has to offer. Beyond its natural geography, which makes Buenos Aires an ideal cycling city, the Buenos Aires city council is constantly investing in construction of cycle paths to create a safe public transport system for cyclists in Buenos Aires. Even as a tourist travelling to Buenos Aires, you too can take advantage of these improvements, either by renting a bike or taking part in Buenos Aires’ popular cycling tours. There are endless ways to explore Buenos Aires by bike. This is why we’ve prepared a guide for you on how to get to know Buenos Aires by bike. Cycling as a form of Public Transport

The program Bicycles of Buenos Aires, created by the city council, is a plan to encourage residents to use their bikes more often and reduce the amount of cars in Buenos Aires’ streets. The cycling paths – which at first were hugely criticized by the city’s motorists – now are an integral part of the city and the residents of Buenos Aires have got used to them. The so-called Biciciendas (Cycle paths) are growing more and more popular, and have come to form an extensive network – which even though not completed yet, already connects Buenos Aires main points of interest, as you can see on this map. This free service is however only available for Argentineans or residents of Buenos Aires. (If that is your case, you can get more info on this service here). For active tourists, the best option is to rent a bike with one of the many companies who offer bike rental in Buenos Aires with options to rent per hour, half-day or full-day or even for an entire week. This way you can take advantage of the city’s brand new network of cycle routes to explore the city and get to all the main tourist attractions in Buenos Aires. It’s also common to find smaller bike rental stands at entrances to the city’s parks, such as the Bosques de Palermo (Palermo Woods) or the city’s huge ecological reserve Costanera Sur. In these cases, the best idea is to rent your bike by the hour, explore the surrounding area and return it when you’re leaving the park.

Exploring Buenos Aires on a bike tour

If you’re not keen about taking off on your bike by yourself or would like to visit Buenos Aires highlights on a guided tour, the best option for you is to take a bike tour of Buenos Aires and get to sightsee Buenos Aires’ must-see places, in a healthy and environmentally friendly way. No need to worry though! All the cycling excursions have a very relaxed rhythm, often stopping off along the way.

Cycling through Buenos Aires’ Parks

In our recent post on the best places to enjoy springtime in Buenos Aires, we came up with a list of the best green spaces in the city. A great way to explore these areas is of course by bike in your own time, renting your own bike or with a group of fellow travellers on a bike tour of Buenos Aires. [caption id="attachment_1713" align="aligncenter" width="540"]Bike tour through the Costanera Sur ecological reserve. The park is huge and the best way to see it is to rent a bike at the park’s entrance (prices around 15 pesos an hour) and cycle right up to the shores of the Rio de la Plata, where many people set out pick-nicks, enjoying the cool river breeze and the sunshine. The city is becoming more and more cycle friendly and there’s a variety of green spaces to explore in the city along safe routes that connect the city’s main points of interest.
