Buenos Aires is a wine lover's heaven. Walk into any supermarket and you'll find a large selection of wines to match your budget, no matter how big or small. While it doesn't take much effort to find a good bottle of wine, if you want something beyond the ordinary, you need to look further than the supermarket shelves and seek out Argentina's boutique wines. To help oenophiles on their quest to get acquainted with the best wines in Argentina, here is a starter guide with 5 boutique wines from Argentina you should try. La Azul

This winery in Uco Valley, Mendoza, is one of a kind. The small, unassuming, grey building is at odds with the luxurious wineries located in this premium wine territory. But the focus of La Azul is purely on their wines. This boutique winery specialises in Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Try their Azul Gran Reserva, a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for two years in the barrel. With a production of under 1,000 bottles, this exclusive wine is something truly special.

CarinaE

Another Mendoza winery, CarinaE  (Latin for Carina) is owned and run by a French couple. The vineyards, located mainly in Maipú, are largely Malbec, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and just 0.5ha of Syrah. While they haven't been producing Syrah for long, their Grand Reserve Syrah 2008 is worth putting down the Malbec for. This complex and spicy wine is aged in oak for fifteen months, and can be aged further in the bottle, if you can resist drinking it immediately.

Gimenez Riili

This boutique winery has been producing notable wine in Argentina since 1945. Run by the Gimenez Riili family (father and sons) who have been making wine since the their ancestors settled in Argentina in the late 19th century, this winery is a family affair, focused on producing premium wines. Their speciality is Malbec. The wine to try here is the Gran Reserva Malbec. This highly rated Malbec, grown in Mendoza, is a great representative of Argentina's high quality Malbecs. If you can, go for the 2008 vintage.

Mairena

Another family run bodega is Familia Blanco, who produces the boutique Mairena label. They specialise in the unsung hero of Argentine wine: Bonarda. This is the second-most planted grape in Argentina, and one that Familia Blanco are experts in. Their Mairena Bonarda Reserve 2009 was recently voted the best Bonarda in the world (2015). Alternatively, try one of their blends, bringing together Malbec and Bonarda, a great celebration of Argentina's greatest grapes.

El Porvenir

This family-run winery is situated in Cafayate, in the province of Salta, Argentina's second most important wine region. Today El Porvenir is run by Lucía Romero Marcuzzi, the granddaughter of the original founder. Taste their Laborum Torrontés. This crisp white wine varietal has become equally as synonymous with Argentina as Malbec, and Salta produces some of the best. Even if you're more a red wine drinker, this Torrontés from El Porvenir's Laborum label is sure to impress you.
