Fortunately, there is no bad time to visit South America. Given the size of the continent, it should not surprise you that at any time of the year there are a number of different climates in action and a lot of things to do and enjoy. In South America, between the months of May and October, autumn begins and the off-season, but what does this mean? It's as simple as the demand falls and prices can be up to 40% cheaper in hotels; flights are usually cheaper and you can find more deals in general. The off-season in Brazil is after the last day of carnival and lasts until December 26 or 27. This is a good time to take advantage of more affordable prices and the tranquility of the beaches that in the summer are overwhelmed by intense tourism.  It's no secret that Brazil offers a diversity of unique landscapes in the world, and as we know, most of the attractions that this South American giant offers us, are mostly wonders of nature. Therefore, today we have compiled 5 best places to visit in off-season in Brazil.

1- 'Catarinense' coast (period: March to June)

One of the best seasons to take advantage of Santa Catarina's beaches is autumn, when the days are clear and sunny, with a pleasant temperature, less rain and emptier beaches than in summer, as well as more affordable prices. Florianópolis, Balneário Camboriú, São Francisco do Sul, Laguna and Imbituba are the favorite cities of tourists during this period, even for surfers, who can enjoy the waves more comfortably.

2- Bonito in Mato Grosso do Sul (period: March to June)

Did you know that discounts on tourist packages to this destination can reach 30%? The observation of marine fauna with snorkeling in Rio de la Plata, including lunch, is the favorite tour of the tourists. On the other hand, Bonito is a tourist city all year round, mainly from December to February. Travel tips: as it’s a rainy period, some trips to Seaside Resort or caves can be affected. It is therefore recommended that you stay at least seven days to enjoy more than the 30 attractions the city has to offer.

3- Historical cities of Minas Gerais (period: April to September)

In April, the rain decreases in the state of Minas Gerais (southeast of Brazil), which represents a good opportunity for a historic tour of Minas Colonial, which go all over the cities of Tiradentes, São João del-Rei, Ouro Preto and Mariana. These towns preserve architectural structures of the baroque style telling the history of the country and exhibit monuments of artists such as Aleijadinho. Amust for off-season in Brazil! Travel Tip: If you are planning a shorter trip, it is worth visiting the center of Belo Horizonte and Brumadinho, where the Inhotim Institute is located, the largest open air museum in the world with a collection of over 500 works. Not to be missed!

4- Fernando de Noronha Archipelago

This place is commonly called "the paradise of the Brazilians", and for a good reason! Its famous beaches and postcard scenery are no less. The Fernando de Noronha archipelago is located on the coast of Pernambuco, and is one of the most sought-after destinations for both foreign and Brazilian tourists. The biggest drawback of visiting this paradisiac place is that traveling in the best season of sunshine  to enjoy the days at the beach includes extreme expenses. And between the months of March and July, the off-season in Brazil, it rains too much, which makes all activities difficult.  Our recommendation is to visit it between August and November, where there is not much demand from tourists, but the climate is very good to enjoy the place, and the prices are a little lower. Travel tips: these months are ideal for diving lovers who want to practice this sport in the archipelago. If your plan is to surf, the best thing to do is to go between January and February.

5- Amazon

The Amazon region is a little easier to decipher, as the rain and "dry" seasons (in quotes, because it never stops raining, only the rainfall decreases) are much more defined. Between December and May is the rainy season and it is easier to navigate certain parts of the region such as streams and "lagoons" that are formed by flooded areas. The dry season starts in June. During this time the water level drops and the beaches on the river bank begin to appear in August. If you want to visit the Amazon region to navigate along the rivers, the best is to go around March and June, when the rivers are high enough and the waters are calm and the prices are still low, just before the summer season where there is a lot of demand from tourists. Ecological tourism is the main attraction of the itineraries in the Amazon. The visitors have the opportunity to know, learn and value the importance of the tropical forest and its conservation.

About the off-season in Brazil:

  • The climate is a little cold in the south, but rainy in the northeast.
  •  It can get boring to visit completely lonely beaches with funny activities availables, but it's to everyone's taste.
  • Travelling to Brazil requires good planning, as the weather conditions change and affect these tourist attractions.
